High Times Magazine

Kym Kemp’s Redheaded Blackbelt

High Times Magazine

When Humboldt State University journalism major, Ingrid Hart, created the Humboldt Honey in 1983, she had no idea the young woman pictured wearing the uniform we’ve all come to know as part of the culture of cannabis would cause such a stir, or continue to be relevant to this day.

You’ve seen her on the Plaza, at Co-op or HSU – the flower of Humboldt womanhood, festooned with any number of countercultural cues – calculatedly proletarian garb, buttons espousing causes sweet and snarky, a sage smudge or patchouli aroma and a faraway look in the eye.

The iconic ‘Humboldt Honey’ image depicting a woman in layers of clothing, Birkenstock sandals, and headscarf was created by Ingrid Hart, a Humboldt State journalism major, back in 1983.
